Save Time and Money

Nothing can substitute for a teacher as your primary source for learning how to speak Chinese. Don't waste your time and money developing bad habits by starting with CD’s, podcasts, or online tools and tutorials.

Many people are looking to these various media solutions to help them get started. At GuavaTalk, we think these things can be great supplementary help, but nothing can substitute for a real, live teacher teaching you how to properly speak Chinese. Some people think, well, I'll get started with some of these other things first, then maybe find a tutor or teacher down the road. That, in our experience, is the exact wrong approach.

For most people starting to learn Chinese, their mother tongue is not a tonal language, and many of the pronunciations within Chinese are not found within their language, so as they start to use materials with no guidance or correction, they ultimately develop bad habits. When the students eventually find a tutor or teacher, these bad habits can take a lot of effort to break. It would have been better, and ultimately cheaper, to start from the beginning with a teacher who knows how to help you properly pronounce and correct your mistakes.

Speak Chinese with Confidence

Many students who have studied Chinese in the past feel embarassed speaking because they haven't had enough time practicing. Or, they never had anyone correct their pronunciation so they'll make a verbal faux pas:
Instead of
"nǐ shì zài wèn wǒ ma?"
(Are you trying to ask me a question?),
you say,
"nǐ shì zài wěn wǒ ma?"
(Are you trying to kiss me?).
Yikes! Let GuavaTalk help you avoid this mistake and others like it.
