2What are lessons like?

Lessons are conducted live, online with your GuavaTalk teacher in China. You will learn materials prepared in advance and presented in an online classroom where you can focus on learning and not copying notes.

Throughout class, you will spend time learning and practicing with your teacher using various exercises and activities designed to help you develop your speaking skills. Unlike audio or software programs, your GuavaTalk teacher will be able to correct you and explain any areas you're struggling with.

After class, you can log into your GuavaTalk account to download and review materials from class, test yourself with flashcards, submit homework, and read feedback from your teacher. You can also track your overall progress log for your course so you can see how well you're reaching your goals.

4What do the grades mean?

We created a grading system similar to a 6 + 1 rubric to support our collaboration with schools. We've expanded its use to include all of our students. Below is a general description of our rubric.

GuavaTalk's Chinese Speaking Rubric is designed to assess the key areas important to helping students improve their oral communication skills. The scores given for each class session are one part of evaluating and providing feedback about each student's performance, as opposed to only achievement for completed assignments.

Categories (max points)
- Pronunciation (6)
- Vocabulary (6)
- Grammar (6)
- Fluency (6)
- Listening Comprehension (6)
- Cooperation (6)
- Attendance (4)
- Homework (10)

The total possible points for each lesson is 50. A score of 4 in each 6-point category represents an average performance. Attendance receives 4 points for coming to class on-time, 2 points for being more than 10 minutes late, and 0 points for an absence.
